  • Muscle Strains – Muscle strains can be as simple as overuse of the neck. For an example, bending over a computer, iPad, iPhone, android, etc.; reading in bed or laying on a couch with your head resting on the arm rest. Some symptoms of muscle strains could be sudden pain, limited range of motion, stiffness, feeling of weakness and even swelling.

  • Degenerated Joints – As you age, the joints in your neck tend to wear down. The cartilage that is between the vertebrae will deteriorate if you have osteoarthritis. When this happens you can get spurs that form on the bone and that would cause pain and limited joint movement.

  • Nerve Compression – When pressure is put directly on a nerve that will cause nerve compression. This type of compression can cause tingling, numbness, pain and weakness of the muscle. Not only does frequent external or continued force cause nerve compression, internal conditions can cause it too. Some internal conditions that could cause nerve compression could be cysts, tumors, hematomas and entrapment neuropathy, which your own body could cause.

  • Poor Posture - Weak muscles and unusual pressure on joints, discs, and nerves can cause stress and pain in the neck.

  • Injuries – Injuries such as an unexpected jolt from a rear-end automobile crash could cause whiplash, which is when your head is yanked back and then forward. This injury would cause the soft tissues in your neck to get strained.

  • Diseases – You can have neck pain from diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, meningitis and some cancers.
